RIM introduces free BlackBerry Protect data security app
Research In Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) launched BlackBerry Protect, a free application enabling consumers to wirelessly back up, restore and locate their BlackBerry smartphone in the event of theft or loss. Available in open beta to users in North America and Latin America, BlackBerry Protect touts features including remote device wipe, remote device lock and a "Lost and Found" screen--consumers can locate their device on a map and remotely activate its loud ringer. In addition, users can leverage over-the-air solutions to back up and restore their Contacts and Calendar data, Memos and Tasks, browser bookmarks and text messages.
Based on the BlackBerry ID system, BlackBerry Protect integrates a web-based end user portal as well as call center access. It is available for download via the BlackBerry App World Test Center as well as the BlackBerry Protect website.
