RIM to launch TV service for BlackBerry?
Research In Motion is reportedly poised to announce a full-episode mobile TV service for BlackBerry devices during next week's CTIA Wireless 2009 event in Las Vegas. Citing multiple sources, New TeeVee reports RIM will introduce a premium monthly subscription service offering users unlimited content licensed from multiple broadcast and cable networks; once a BlackBerry user orders a program, the show will be downloaded to their device via WiFi, sidestepping concerns the service might clog 3G networks. (Although WiFi downloads would prevent the TV service from expanding across the entire BlackBerry product line--the touchscreen BlackBerry Storm, seemingly an ideal candidate for this kind of video application, does not feature WiFi connectivity.)
A RIM spokesperson told New TeeVee the device manufacturer does not comment on unannounced products or applications. RIM is already slated to formally launch its BlackBerry App World virtual storefront on April 1 in conjunction with co-CEO Mike Lazaridis' keynote appearance at CTIA.
