Angry Birds Star Wars re-imagines the characters popularized in previous Angry Birds entries as the heroes and villains of the Star Wars saga, adapting iconic storylines, costumes and settings from the film series to fit within the context of Rovio's signature physics-based gameplay. In addition to the mobile game--launching Nov. 8 across operating systems including Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS, Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android, Amazon's Kindle Fire and Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows Phone--Rovio and Lucasfilm will also team on merchandise like plush toys, action figures and apparel.
Angry Birds Star Wars is the fifth installment in the main Angry Birds series, which first launched in late 2009. The franchise topped the 1 billion cumulative download mark earlier this year. Last month, Rovio introduced Bad Piggies, an Angry Birds spinoff that shines the spotlight on the green pigs who stole the birds' eggs in previous chapters of the franchise. The firm has also expanded beyond its signature property with Amazing Alex, issued this summer.
