Rumor Mill: RIM is developing a music service for BlackBerry
On the heels of MetroPCS's (NASDAQ:PCS) foray into the mobile music market, Research In Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) has started working on its own mobile music system, multiple anonymous sources told CNet.
The music service, which is rumored to run in conjunction with the company's BlackBerry Messenger, could roll out in beta in a few weeks. RIM has already entered into an agreement with one of the four major record labels, CNet reports.
Cooperation with the major record labels is essential to securing content and to gaining traction with users, a step digital music platform Spotify was able to land before going live in the U.S. last month.
Earlier this week, MetroPCS and on-demand digital music service Rhapsody introduced Music for All, an ad-free, unlimited music service bundled into the prepaid carrier's unlimited talk, text and web plan for $60 per month. Music for All, optimized for Android devices, gives users access to more than 12 million songs and can be downloaded from the @metro App store or Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android Market.
