Samsung inks location tech deal with Skyhook Wireless
Geo-location solutions provider Skyhook Wireless announced Samsung will deploy its Core Location Platform across multiple devices beginning with the Samsung Wave, the first smartphone powered by the device maker's new bada mobile platform. Core Location encompasses WiFi, cellular and GPS to fulfill hundreds of millions of location requests each day across more than 100 million handsets--according to Skyhook, the partnership with Samsung will improve location-based applications running on bada devices, boosting the precision, reliability and efficiency of site-specific information.
Samsung introduced the bada platform in late 2009. bada (translating to "ocean" in Korean) promises an open, feature-rich environment for creating enhanced mobile consumer experiences--based on Samsung's TouchWiz user interface, bada provides developers with web control, motion sensing, fine-tuned vibration control and face detection tools, complete with support for context-aware applications incorporating accelerometers, tilt, weather, proximity and activity sensors. Samsung adds that bada will support a host of service-centric features like social networking, device synchronization, content management, location-based services and commerce services, all enabled by back-end servers.
