SanDisk, Sony, operators team on content delivery standard
BARCELONA, Spain--Flash memory product manufacturer SanDisk is partnering with mobile operators Orange and Softbank along with Sony Pictures Entertainment to launch the HQME Steering Committee, an alliance dedicated to forging an industry standard for managing and delivering data from mobile networks to connected devices. The proposed HQME (High Quality Mobile Experience) standard leverages local storage and content caching to reduce network congestion and accelerate data transfer, promising more efficient delivery of bandwidth-intensive mobile multimedia--according to SanDisk, HQME views mobile device memory as "the last node on the network," with downloads taking place while the phone is connected to AC power and Wi-Fi, effectively circumventing network congestion during peak hours.
The HQME Steering Committee will drive the development of the HQME standard, coordinating the standards body and spearheading the development of business models that implement the standard. The committee adds that the HQME standard enjoys the support of HQME has the support of organizations including the World Wide Web Consortium and the Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem.
