Showtime bows mobile play
Showtime Networks is offering direct-to-consumer video programming via an off-deck WAP portal designed by Mobile Streams. Content at launch includes video clips and wallpaper images of Showtime original programming "Dexter," "Weeds" and "The Underground." Additional clips from shows like "Sleeper Cell," "The L Word" and "Showtime Championship Boxing" will be added in coming weeks, the company said.
Showtime is pretty clear the move is purely promotional, designed to drive interest in its current programs. Overall, it's a rather underwheliming, toe-in-the-water-dipping move that elicits more shrugs than raised eyebrows. More interesting would be original programming developed for the mobile phone, or exclusive clips of existing shows available only to phone users. But it is a first step.
