Skyfire 4.0 for iOS touts video recommendations engine
Mobile web solutions developer Skyfire is rolling out version 4.0 of its eponymous browser for Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS platform, introducing a video recommendations engine that suggests clips and live streams based on the content consumers are currently accessing.
Skyfire for iOS 4.0 boasts a revamped SkyBar toolbar incorporating a new Video button that automatically generates lists of relevant content. If a video is available from the webpage the user is browsing, that video shows first, with related recommendations listed below. Skyfire also suggests clips on pages with no video, directing users to content elsewhere on the website in question or similar websites, as well as the hottest trending videos of the day based on activity across the Skyfire community.
The Skyfire browser enables iOS users to run Adobe Flash-based video, working around Apple's restrictions on the Flash runtime by translating video content in the HTML5 web standard; the browser then displays a thumbnail that users can click to stream the clip from Skyfire's servers. Skyfire for iOS was built in accordance with Apple guidelines, leveraging a WebKit browser core shared with Safari as well as h.264 adaptive streaming. The browser also touts Facebook and Twitter QuickView, promising one-touch access to social media tools as well as Google Reader support.
Skyfire for iOS 4.0 arrives as the startup celebrates 10 million downloads across the iOS and Android operating systems. Skyfire now boasts users in 150 million countries worldwide.
