Slingbox offers free mobile TV software

Tools

Anyone buying a new Slingbox device between now and Sept. 16 will get a free version of the company's SlingPlayer Mobile TV service, a $30 value. Slingbox is a device that forwards live TV feeds to any Internet-connected device, including smartphones running Windows Mobile. With this offer, the company is leaning heavily on a mobile play to promote the broader service--a rare case of mobile driving interest in a primarily wired service.

Wireless operators have expressed concern over the Slingbox mobile capability, as have content owners, with the phrase "potential litigation" being uttered more than once. One to keep an eye on.
