SlingPlayer video placeshifting app extends to Windows Phone 7

Tools

Satellite broadcaster EchoStar Corporation's Sling Media content placeshifting unit Sling Media will expand its SlingPlayer Mobile application to Microsoft's fledgling Windows Phone 7 smartphone operating system, enabling consumers to view their favorite television programs on the go. Priced at $29.99 and available for download via Microsoft's Windows Phone Marketplace application storefront, SlingPlayer Mobile 7 connects to a Slingbox SOLO or Slingbox PRO-HD unit via the web--in addition to viewing video content across a 3G or WiFi connect, consumers can also leverage the app to change channels or control their DVRs. For now, the WP7 version is limited to English language users, although Sling Media plans to other languages in the future.

In addition to Windows Phone 7, SlingPlayer Mobile supports Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone and iPod touch as well as smartphones running Google's Android mobile operating system. Sling Media also offers limited support for the BlackBerry, Symbian and Palm OS platforms. Earlier this year, the firm confirmed it is working on a new SlingPlayer HD version optimized for Apple's iPad tablet, but the solution has not yet surfaced in Apple's App Store.
