Social network myYearbook acquires Android games, multiplayer engine
Teen-focused social networking service myYearbook has acquired five Android-powered mobile games as well as Android multiplayer gaming engine FlockEngine in a bid to accelerate its mobile strategy. Two myYearbook purchases--Toss It and Tic Tac Toe--rank among the top 30 free Android Market game downloads; the firm also snapped up Minesweeper, SpringDroid and Line of 4. Financial terms of the acquisitions were not disclosed.
Six years after launching in a single high school, myYearbook now encompasses 25 million users worldwide. The firm notes that a third of its daily visits originate via mobile devices, up from just 2 percent in early 2010, with mobile users accessing the site an average of 115 times per month. myYearbook adds that its existing mobile applications experience more than 25,000 times a day; apps are monetized through advertising efforts (with impressions increasing 400 percent over the last six months) and its Lunch Money virtual currency.
myYearbook said in the months ahead it will introduce additional mobile apps targeting teens and young adults, building a mobile social layer designed to simplify meeting new people.
