Sony Ericsson launches Android Market apps channel
Sony Ericsson introduced its own customized application channel on Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android Market, promising consumers mobile software recommendations and exclusive offers. According to Sony Ericsson, the new cross-operator Android Market channel--the first of its kind launched by a device manufacturer--spotlights apps and games that optimize the user experience, offering a promotional vehicle for developer partners in addition to supplying direct access to original Sony Ericsson apps like Timescape plug-ins. Some apps will be exclusive to the channel. Sony Ericsson adds that the initiative replaces the existing My Apps options across its Android smartphones, although the My Apps feature remains accessible via the Menu key.
Earlier this month, Sony Ericsson introduced its PlayStation-certified Xperia Play smartphone in markets including the U.K., Germany, Russia, Hong Kong and Taiwan, rolling out more than 60 games optimized expressly for the Android-based device. Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) will launch the Xperia Play in the U.S. market. During last month's CTIA Wireless 2011 event, Todd Murphy--director of Verizon's consumer solutions group--told FierceMobileContent the smartphone will feature a customized version of the operator's V Cast Apps storefront that promotes games optimized for the phone.
"Whenever you flip open the device, it goes to all the games you have loaded and recommends other high-quality games that are using the D-pad and using the graphics processor, and everything deep-links into our store," Murphy said. "It's a seamless shopping experience for the customer."
