Sony Ericsson rolls out over 60 games with Xperia Play launch

Sony Ericsson introduced its PlayStation-certified Xperia Play smartphone in markets including the U.K., Germany, Russia, Hong Kong and Taiwan, rolling out more than 60 games optimized expressly for the device.

According to Sony Ericsson, the game lineup--which includes Need for Speed, Assassins Creed Altair's Chronicles HD, N.O.V.A.2 and Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell--bring together classic PlayStation titles, popular casual games and 3D efforts that leverage the Xperia Play's graphical capabilities.

All games are downloadable via the Xperia Play Launcher application, which is activated by sliding open the gamepad--the app recommends games and allows users to search for additional titles across the Android Market storefront. Sony Ericsson adds it has forged partnerships with over 20 game developers including Sony Computer Entertainment, Gameloft, Electronic Arts and Glu Mobile, ensuring a steady flow of new releases.

Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) will launch the Xperia Play in the U.S. market. During last month's CTIA Wireless 2011 event, Todd Murphy--director of Verizon's consumer solutions group--told FierceMobileContent the smartphone will feature a customized version of the operator's V Cast Apps storefront that promotes games optimized for the phone. "Whenever you flip open the device, it goes to all the games you have loaded and recommends other high-quality games that are using the D-pad and using the graphics processor, and everything deep-links into our store," Murphy said. "It's a seamless shopping experience for the customer."
