Sports Illustrated expands digital efforts to Android
Time Inc.-owned Sports Illustrated will launch a digital edition optimized for smartphones and tablets running Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android operating system. The Wall Street Journal reports the venerable sports journal will offer multiple subscription offerings touting various combinations of the magazine in print and electronic form--packaging and pricing details remain unknown. The Journal adds that the SI launch is part of a larger Time Inc. effort to develop a subscription platform giving consumers the flexibility to sign up once to access content across multiple media formats and digital platforms; the publisher also will offer Sports Illustrated and other properties via HP's forthcoming TouchPad device.
In mid-2010, Time Inc. and Turner Broadcasting System announced a strategic digital partnership aligning Sports Illustrated with the cable network's Turner Sports unit. Per terms of the agreement, Sports Illustrated continues to create all editorial content across its media platforms, including its print magazine, the web, mobile phones and tablets--Turner Sports oversees business and technical operations, ad sales, product management and marketing, with the two organizations collaborating on multiplatform sales across their collective properties. SI and Turner stated they also will partner on new mobile products and applications.
