Sprint and Samsung to launch free mobile DTV trial
Sprint and Samsung announced plans to launch a free-to-air mobile DTV trial beginning in the first quarter of 2010 and spotlighting the manufacturer's Moment smartphone. Targeting Sprint subscribers in the Washington, D.C. and Baltimore markets, the trial will present live digital TV via Samsung's Mobile DTV Chip, a single-chip solution based on the recently approved Advanced Television Systems Committee's Mobile Digital TV standard. Samsung Moment devices will receive live TV programming from local broadcast affiliates, including primetime network programs, local news and sports, and emergency alerts.
According to Sprint and Samsung, the Android-powered Moment was selected due to its 3.2-inch AMOLED display screen, which promises bold colors, wide viewing angles and, perhaps most importantly, bright pictures outdoors. In addition, Samsung's single-chip solution touts reception at lower power, size and cost than rival multi-chip solutions.
