Lookout Mobile Security and Sprint (NYSE:S) have introduced Safe Browsing, an application designed to protect users against phishing and malware threats lurking across the mobile web.

Lookout's Safe Browsing will be available on Sprint phones via the Android Market.

Available for download via Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android Market, the Safe Browsing app automatically checks every URL a user visits in real time, warning against phishing scams and unsafe sites and effectively negating threats to financial information, social media profiles and related personal data stored on mobile devices. According to Lookout, the smaller form factor of mobile devices means subscribers are three times more likely to click on a suspicious link than if they're accessing the web via PC.

Safe Browsing heralds the beginning of a new strategic partnership between Lookout and Sprint that includes the Lookout Premium service, priced at $2.99 per month or $29.99 a year. In addition to Safe Browsing, Lookout Premium includes remote Lock and Wipe capabilities, enhanced photo and call history backup and restoration and Privacy Advisor, which enables users to track and manage all apps that access private data. Sprint subscribers may also download a free trial version of Safe Browsing.

Mobile data security is an increasingly hot topic among subscribers, especially with the rollout of mobile payment and banking solutions. Late last month, Google and Sprint announced plans to launch a Near Field Communications-based contactless payment platform in partnership with financial services providers MasterCard, Citi and First Data, enabling subscribers to purchase goods and redeem coupons and loyalty rewards via select Android smartphones.
