Sprint recruiting BlackBerry users for voicemail-to-text service
Sprint (NYSE:S) is seeking BlackBerry smartphone users to trial Voicemail-2-Text, a forthcoming service that transcribes voicemail messages into text messages accessible within the phone's Messaging inbox. Specifics on Voicemail-2-Text are scarce--for now, Sprint is recruiting 100 subscribers with active devices running BlackBerry OS 4.2 or higher to participate in consumer trials scheduled to begin June 20. Sprint recommends that participants already subscribe to some kind of messaging service plan to avoid additional charges and requests that they supply candid feedback on the service once the trial concludes.
It is unknown when or if Sprint plans to officially launch the Voicemail-2-Text service. Although the carrier is targeting only BlackBerry users for the trial, it is unclear whether the service is limited solely to the BlackBerry operating system. Sprint already offers a visual voicemail solution for Android devices, but an employee posting on the Sprint Community forum explains Voicemail-2-Text "is a little different."
