AT&T launches Code Scanner barcode app
AT&T (NYSE:T) introduced Code Scanner, a new barcode reader application optimized for smartphones including Android and BlackBerry devices. The free AT&T Code Scanner app enables subscribers to scan 2D (QR and datamatrix codes) and 1D (UPC and EAN) barcodes in magazines, stores and online, unlocking content and offers from favorite retailers and brands--in addition, the operator launched AT&T Create-a-Code, giving consumers the tools to make their own personalized mobile barcodes to direct contacts to a v-card, Facebook account, personal blog or recommended website. AT&T also offers Code Management Platform, giving businesses the tools to create, manage and measure their barcode campaigns.
AT&T cites a recent ABI Research study indicating that 80 percent of U.S. respondents express interest in scanning barcodes with their mobile device. Sixty-nine percent of respondents say they want to scan barcodes to capture and redeem coupons and discounts.
