T-Mobile USA data revenues jump 23% in Q2 from year ago
T-Mobile USA reported second quarter net income of $425 million, up from $322 million in the first quarter of
2009 but down from $452 million a year ago as the operator lost contract customers and clients reduced spending. T-Mobile USA added 325,000 net new customers in Q2, falling from 415,000 in the first quarter of 2009 and 668,000 in the second quarter of 2008--contract churn was 2.2 percent, down from 2.3 percent the previous quarter of 2009 but up from 1.9 percent a year ago. As of the end of June, contract customers now comprise 81 percent of T-Mobile USA's total subscriber base--the carrier ended the second quarter of 2009 with 33.5 million customers, up from 33.2 million at the end of Q1.
T-Mobile USA's total revenues, including service, equipment and other revenues were $5.34 billion in the second quarter of 2009, down from $5.40 billion in the first quarter of 2009 and $5.47 billion in the second quarter of 2008. ARPU remained consistent quarter-over-quarter at $48, down from $52 a year ago. Data services revenue grew to $990 million in Q2, representing 20.8 percent of blended ARPU or $9.90 per customer, up from 19.6 percent of blended ARPU/$9.40 per customer in the first quarter and 16.6 percent/$8.60 per customer a year earlier. Data services revenue increased 6 percent compared to the first quarter of 2009 and 23% year-over-year.
T-Mobile USA adds that 2.1 million 3G-capable converged devices, including the Android G1, the Sidekick LX and Samsung's Behold and Memoir, were active on its network at the end of the second quarter. Messaging volume increased to 74 billion, up 8 billion compared to Q1 totals and a 33 billion increase over the second quarter of 2008.
