T-Mobile USA removes ads from Android notification bar
T-Mobile USA has removed advertisements that appeared on the notification bar of some Android smartphones, blaming the controversy on a software issue.
Ads promoting T-Mobile USA's VIP Zone loyalty program first surfaced in mid-March following an update of the My Account customer management app. Subscribers voiced their frustrations on the T-Mobile Support forums, demanding the operator offer them the flexibility to opt out of the campaign.
T-Mobile disabled the ads Friday afternoon, citing a systems error. "During a recent software update, a message to promote T-Mobile's free VIP Zone was mistakenly sent to certain customers and appeared on the notification bar for some Android devices," reads a statement released to TMoNews. "After T-Mobile was made aware of this mistake, the company stopped the notifications. T-Mobile apologizes for the inconvenience this may have caused customers."
