T-Mobile USA revising data prices
T-Mobile USA is reportedly poised to revamp its mobile data pricing structure along the lines of the unlimited data plans introduced in conjunction with its newly-released G1, the first handset based on Google's Android mobile operating system. According to unofficial T-Mobile blog TmoNews, the operator will introduce unlimited data and messaging for $34.99 per month across its entire handset portfolio, including BlackBerry devices--the new unlimited plans will be soft-capped at 10GB of usage, after which speeds will be limited to 50kbps. (By comparison, data plans for the G1 run between $25 and $35 per month, with the $35 plan promising unlimited web, email and messaging access.) "Phone First" and T-Mobile Shadow customers will have their choice between plans with 100MB data and unlimited messaging ($19.99 per month) or 50MB data with 400 messages ($9.99 per month). T-Mobile USA is expected to formally announce the pricing changes in early November.
In late September, T-Mobile USA found itself the subject of controversy when it announced plans to cap data usage on its 3G UMTS network at 1GB. The operator quickly reversed course, issuing a statement that it would no longer limit data usage after all: "We removed the 1GB soft limit from our policy statement, and we are confident T-Mobile G1 customers will enjoy the high speed of data access over our 3G network. The specific terms for our new data plans are still being reviewed and once they are final we will be certain to share this broadly with current customers and potential new customers."
