AT&T vows 10 new quick messaging phones over next year
SAN DIEGO--AT&T (NYSE:T) announced it will release 10 new quick messaging phones over the next year, also promising developers a more standardized environment to create applications for QMP devices. Speaking here at Qualcomm's Uplinq 2010 event, AT&T Mobility chief marketing officer David Christopher said QMPs now make up more than 30 percent of its handset sales, prompting the operator to integrate Qualcomm's Brew MP solution in an effort to improve and expand the capabilities of the messaging-centric device line. According to Christopher, the majority of AT&T's QMP lineup will incorporate Brew MP (which promises smartphone functionality across multiple device tiers), allowing for the addition of more feature-rich apps beyond messaging.
"Brew MP is absolutely critical to executing our strategy," Christopher said. "High-level of customization and functionality across a consistent application environment." He also commended Brew MP's efficiency in regards to device processing, memory and power requirements.
Christopher also said AT&T will offer developers new application programming interfaces supporting messaging, location and device identification solutions. In addition, AT&T's forthcoming Brew MP application storefront will allow developer partners to offer carrier billing options and set their own application prices. "We have a robust roadmap to support the creation of compelling and differentiated applications," Christopher said. "We want [developers] to rethink what is possible. The sky is the limit."
