Telus terminates Amp'd Mobile Canada deal
Canadian operator Telus Corp. has pulled the plug on its distribution, customer care and billing agreement with Amp'd Mobile Canada, which launched in mid-March. According to Telus, it ceased sales of Amp'd products in its stores and licensed retailers, also shuttering the Amp'd Mobile Canada flagship store in Toronto's entertainment district. For now, Telus will continue supporting Amp'd voice and messaging services, but will begin phasing out the MVNO's signature content and multimedia services. "It's been an uncertain situation, and at this point we felt that it's best to discontinue sales in Canada," said Telus spokeswoman Julie Smithers in an interview with The Globe and Mail. Telus plans to contact Amp'd Mobile Canada's customers to discuss alternative wireless services, she said.
Telus Corp.'s announcement follows on the heels of news that provider Prexar Mobile signed a definitive agreement to acquire Amp'd Mobile's U.S. assets, promising uninterrupted service for Amp'd subscribers who transition to the Prexar service. Amp'd Mobile filed for bankruptcy in late July to begin auctioning off its remaining assets.
