Turner launches CNN Mobile
Turner Broadcasting System International launched its new CNN Mobile service, a direct-to-consumer WAP-enabled portal developed in collaboration with Ericsson. The free news service will feature breaking news SMS alerts, a searchable 14-day news archive, category-based sections including Business, Weather and Entertainment, "In the Field" blog content contributed by international correspondents, and a made-for-mobile hourly video update, "World News Now." CNN will support the mobile service via advertising, announcing an agreement with automaker Lexus that will include banner ads as well as pre- and post-roll spots bookending the two-minute "World News Now" clip.
CNN Mobile will initially launch in the European, Middle Eastern, African and Latin American markets. "CNN is committed to bringing news to our global users across multiple platforms," said Turner Broadcasting International senior VP of digital media Casey Harwood in a prepared statement. "More and more of our users are demanding their news on the go, and we have developed this new mobile service to deliver the best possible user experience."
