Twitter adds photo sharing via text messaging
Twitter is rolling out a new mobile feature enabling users to post photos to their account by attaching the image to a text message. According to Twitter, users simply enter the text of their tweet per usual, add the photo and send it to Twitter via short code (40404 in the U.S.). Operators in the U.S. supporting the new service include Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ), AT&T (NYSE:T) and U.S. Cellular.
Close to 4 million text messages are sent and received on Twitter every month. The microblogging platform now boasts 100 million active users, defined by CEO Dick Costolo as anyone who logs in at least once a month. Earlier this month, Costolo said 50 million users log in every day--in addition, 55 percent of all active users are active on mobile, a 40 percent quarter-over-quarter increase.
Twitter.com now welcomes 400 million unique visitors each month, up from 250 million at the beginning of 2011. "There's still a lot of people who log into Twitter but don't use it every day," Costolo said. In fact, 40 percent of all active users "don't tweet," meaning they haven't tweeted within the past month--Costolo explained that many users simply follow athletes or celebrities, although most non-tweeters eventually move from content consumption to production.
