Twitter premieres open-source Android application
Twitter announced the introduction of Twitter for Android, a free application developed in cooperation with Google's Android engineering team and available for download via the Android Market storefront. Writing on the Twitter Blog, the microblogging service provider's Leland Rechis notes the app (optimized for smartphones running Android 2.1 and above) enables users to share links and photos, access timelines using the homescreen widget, view a tweet location on a map and read tweets in the device's phonebook, GoogleTalk list or any application that uses Android's QuickContact bar. Rechis adds that Google will be open sourcing the Twitter app code in the near future, enabling Android developers to incorporate Twitter APIs into their applications.
