Twitter signups increase 3x following iOS 5 integration

Tools

Twitter user signups have increased 3x in the week since Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) introduced its iOS 5 mobile operating system, bringing with it deep Twitter integration. The Apple OS allows users to sign in once and then tweet directly from all Twitter-enabled apps--among them Photos, Camera, Safari, YouTube and Maps--with a single tap.

Speaking at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco, Twitter CEO Dick Costolo said the microblogging platform now serves up to a billion tweets every four or five days. Twitter users average 250 million tweets per day, up from 100 million per day in early 2011 and increasing from 90 million in Sept. 2010. In addition, more than half of all 100 million active Twitter users are now accessing the platform every day, compared to 30 percent in Jan. 2011.

Costolo said the deluge of Twitter activity effectively guarantees that new users should be able to find content relevant to them. "We've got to figure out how to capture the volume at the same time as separating the signal from the noise," Costolo said. "We think that we can be on 2 billion devices around the world and reach every person on the planet, and the way to do that is through simplifying."

Apple issued iOS 5 last week, days ahead of its new iPhone 4S. Apple initially confirmed iOS 5's Twitter integration plans in June--Twitter will extend the single sign-on capability to developers as well, enabling the creation of more social mobile app experiences. Twitter director of platform Ryan Sarver has said the company expects direct iOS integration to profoundly impact the shape and scope of applications developed around social interaction: "Now literally every iOS developer can be a Twitter developer," Sarver said. "We think every app is going to benefit from instant personalization from this social layer, from gaming to utilities to enterprise apps."
