Verizon forges Android pact with Google
Verizon Wireless and Google announced a strategic partnership to deliver mobile applications, services and devices based on the Android operating system. Details on the agreement were still emerging at press time, but here's what we know right now: Verizon and Google will devote "substantial resources" to accelerate delivery of new Android applications and collaboration on creating, marketing and distributing new products and services. In addition, Verizon and Google will jointly develop a series of Android-based devices pre-loaded with applications from both firms as well as third-party software developers--manufacturing partners were not disclosed. Verizon did add it will introduce Android-based devices within the next few weeks.
According to The New York Times, Verizon Wireless CEO Lowell McAdam confirmed the deal will include the much-debated Google Voice application, which offers free long-distance calling, text messaging and voice mail. "Either you have an open device or not," McAdam said during a conference call this morning. "This will be open." Presumably Verizon Wireless will also support the Android Market virtual application storefront.
