Verizon to launch Sling Media subscription service
Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) will soon introduce a subscription offering from placeshifting technology developer Sling Media, enabling users with selected smartphones optimized for the operator's 4G LTE Mobile Broadband network to view their home television content on the go. Sling Media's SlingPlayer application gives subscribers the flexibility to stream live and recorded TV content from their home entertainment system to their mobile device; the Verizon subscription service, available for download via the carrier's V Cast Apps storefront, will include a Slingbox tuner unit, the SlingPlayer app and networking accessories. Verizon will bill the Sling service to the subscriber's standard monthly bill, enabling users to sidestep longterm contracts; pricing details were not announced.
The Sling Media agreement was one of a host of 4G LTE multimedia deals announced by Verizon Wireless late last week during the waning hours of the Consumer Electronics Show event in Las Vegas. Verizon also unveiled partnerships with digital music services Rhapsody, MOG, Slacker Radio and TuneWiki, Fox Mobile Group's on-demand video effort Bitbop and gaming firm Gameloft.
