Verizon, Samsung team on dedicated mobile ticker display
Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) and Samsung Mobile introduced the Samsung Continuum, a new Android
2.1-powered smartphone boasting a dedicated ticker display offering users real-time access to news, sports, finance, music services, messaging features and social networking updates. Priced at $199 after a $100 mail-in rebate, the Continuum boasts two screens: A 3.4-inch touchscreen Super AMOLED display complemented by a customizable 1.8-inch Super AMOLED dedicated ticker streaming customized, up-to-the-minute information. According to Verizon and Samsung, ticker display functions do not interrupt activities on the main screen.
The Continuum also features Samsung's Social Hub, a messaging, contacts and calendar sync feature integrating information from Microsoft Exchange, Google Calendar and social networking services like Facebook. Also included: AllShare inter-device connectivity for sending multimedia content wirelessly to other Digital Living Network Alliance-enabled devices like TVs and laptops. The Continuum also features support for Google services like Gmail, YouTube and Android Market, as well as preloaded Bing Maps and Bing Search tools.
Samsung is the top-selling device manufacturer in the U.S. according to data issued last week by digital research firm comScore. As of Sept. 2010, Samsung controls 23.5 percent of the U.S. mobile handset market, up from 22.8 percent the previous quarter.
