Verizon, AT&T expand mobile TV coverage

Tools

Verizon Wireless and AT&T announced their respective mobile TV efforts--both powered by Qualcomm's FLO TV mobile broadcast unit--have expanded into a series of new U.S. markets in the wake of the long-planned national DTV transition, which freed up spectrum for the FLO TV network. Verizon's V Cast Mobile TV service is now available to subscribers in the San Francisco, Cleveland and Milwaukee markets, offering full-length simulcast and time-shifted programming from brands including CBS, CBS College Sports, CBS News, CNBC, Comedy Central, ESPN, Fox Mobile, MSNBC, MTV, NBC, NBC 2Go, NBC News, NBC Sports, Nickelodeon and NickToons. V Cast Mobile TV also features parental control features to monitor and restrict the programs children view.

AT&T Mobile TV will debut in about 20 new U.S. markets, including Boston, Charlotte, Cleveland, Houston, Miami, Milwaukee, Sacramento and San Francisco, in addition to cities in California, Connecticut, Florida, New Jersey, North Carolina and the Northeast. The service is now available in more than 80 markets nationwide. Alongside content from CBS Mobile, CNBC, Comedy Central, ESPN Mobile TV, FOX Mobile, FOX News, MSNBC, MTV, NBC 2Go and Nickelodeon, AT&T Mobile TV offers exclusive content from CNN Mobile and the Sony Crackle movie channel, as well as bonus channels dedicated to live sports and concerts. AT&T Mobile TV added four channels to offer coverage of all 63 games from this year's NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship, and together the channels ranked as the service's second most-watched channels throughout the 11-day broadcast period, earning more than 19 percent of viewing share across all channels.
