Verizon touts 3D mapping with new VZ Navigator VX

Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) launched VZ Navigator VX, an updated version of its premium navigation optimized for select Android smartphones, including the Droid X, Droid Incredible and Samsung Fascinate. Powered by location-based solutions provider TeleCommunication Systems, VZ Navigator VX boasts 3D navigation views incorporating enhanced 3D city models and true-to-life images of highway and exit signs--for now, 3D capabilities are limited to the New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington D.C., Detroit and Kansas City markets, although Verizon plans to introduce new markets in the months ahead. In addition, VZ Navigator VX boasts satellite maps and day/night modes as well as improved functionality for identifying points of interest, the ability to run multiple functions within a navigation session and Facebook integration.

VZ Navigator VX is available for $9.99 a month for unlimited access, $4.99 for a weekly usage or $2.99 for a one-day/24-hour use. According to Verizon Wireless, monthly charge includes continuous updates to maps and points of interest. The operator notes it will extend VZ Navigator VX to additional devices throughout 2011.
