Verizon turns on Mobile TiVo
A week after rival AT&T announced its remote television scheduling service, Verizon Wireless launched a mobile remote control service of its own, partnering with DVR pioneer TiVo for a downloadable application enabling subscribers to wirelessly program broadcast recordings on their TiVo boxes. TiVo Mobile scheduling employs the TiVo interface to enable mobile search and browsing through upcoming television listings--subscribers will also receive access to premium entertainment content including a customizable channel lineup, a checklist of popular shows and TiVo viewing recommendations. TiVo Mobile scheduling is available for $1.99 per month.
It's interesting that both AT&T and Verizon have launched a remote TV scheduling service, something that was first talked about by Sprint when it announced its joint venture with the cable companies. Time-Warner launched its Mobile Access wireless service powered by Sprint last month in a couple of markets. The service lets customers view their cable TV programming guides on the phone but doesn't yet let them remotely program their cable DVR through their wireless phone. You would think that the Sprint/cable JV would make this service available long before its other Tier 1 competitors.
