Verizon Wireless data revenues top $16 billion in 2009

Verizon Communications reported fourth quarter 2009 revenues of $27.1 billion, up almost 10 percent year-over-year from $24.6 billion. Its Verizon Wireless unit added a net of 2.2 million total customers, including 1.2 million retail subscribers--the operator now boasts 91.2 million total customers (up 26.6 percent from the year-ago quarter) and 87.5 million retail customers. Verizon Wireless service revenues in the fourth quarter were $13.5 billion, up 22.5 percent over Q4 2008--full-year revenues were $62.1 billion, up 25.9 percent. Retail service ARPU dropped 2.2 percent over the previous year to $50.75. 

Verizon Wireless reported full-year mobile data revenues of $16 billion, up 31 percent compared to 2008 totals. In the fourth quarter, data revenues represented 31.9 percent of all Verizon Wireless service revenues, increasing from 26.5 percent in the fourth quarter of 2008--retail data ARPU grew to $16.24, up 16.1 percent year-over-year. During the fourth quarter, Verizon Wireless subscribers sent or received more than 162 billion text messages, and sent more than 4 billion picture/video messages--in addition, consumers completed more than 38 million music and video downloads.
