Verizon Wireless introduces VZ Navigator 5.0

Tools

Verizon Wireless announced the launch of VZ Navigator 5.0, the newest version of its popular map, navigation and local search service.  Powered by mobile communication technology solutions provider TeleCommunication Systems, the latest incarnation of the GPS-enabled service promises an updated, easy-to-use interface, improved functionality for identifying points of interest and the capacity to run multiple VZ Navigator functions simultaneously within a navigation session. In addition, the service now integrates with Facebook, enabling users to update their status to reflect their current location.

Other improvements of VZ Navigator 5.0: Data is now streamed to devices, populating display screens more quickly; access to premium places of interest will include detailed descriptions, clearly branded by Map Icons; opt-in, anonymous Traffic Crowd Sourcing will enable consumers to send real-time location and speed to the VZ Navigator traffic reporting service, translating to more timely notifications and improved accuracy; and graphic notifications will alert users of tunnels, U-turns, traffic circles and toll plazas.

VZ Navigator 5.0 will roll out on devices including the BlackBerry Curve 8530, LG enV Touch, HTC Touch Pro2 and Samsung Omnia. The service is available for $9.99 a month for unlimited access or $2.99 for one-day/24-hour access on certain devices--according to Verizon Wireless, the monthly charge includes continuous updates to maps and points of interest, unlike traditional navigation devices and navigation devices built into automobiles that require annual upgrades to remain accurate. In January, handset maker Nokia announced a new version of Ovi Maps including free walk and drive navigation tools, following on the heels of the free Google Maps Navigation service, launched in late 2009. The emergence of free navigation services has prompted some analysts and pundits to question the continued viability of premium services like VZ Navigator.
