Verizon Wireless premieres revamped NFL Mobile
With the 2010-11 National Football League season on the horizon, Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) launched an updated version of its NFL Mobile application, promising subscribers a revamped look and feel as well as news, headlines, statistics and scores extending from training camp to Super Bowl XLV. In addition to live audio broadcasts of every regular season game, NFL Mobile users can add a premium V Cast Video subscription to access video-on-demand player and team news as well as live streaming coverage of the NFL Network, the cable channel's NFL RedZone offshoot (which airs live or near-live look-ins of every significant play and touchdown from the Sunday afternoon action), NBC's marquee Sunday Night Football and NFL Network's Thursday Night Football.
To download NFL Mobile, Verizon subscribers can text "NFL" to 8915 for a link to the application--Android users can also download the app via Android Market. There is no monthly subscription fee for NFL Mobile, and NFL Network and video-on-demand content is free through the end of August--beginning Sept. 1, customers looking to access NFL video will require a $10 month V Cast Video subscription. Verizon adds usage of NFL Mobile will be charged according to each customer's data package.
Verizon Wireless announced a four-year sponsorship agreement with the National Football League in March 2010. Per terms of the deal, Verizon Wireless is now the league's exclusive mobile media partner as well as its official wireless service sponsor, roles previously filled by Sprint. According to The Wall Street Journal, the new deal is valued at $720 million, including a rights fee and advertising spending--the earlier Sprint package was valued at $120 million.
