Virgin Mobile launches mobile TV

Tools

Virgin Mobile U.K. has finally launched its mobile TV service, powered by BT and Microsoft. The service makes use of BT Movio, which is more like a traditional broadcast model than other British mobile TV solutions--like Vodafone and France Telecom's Orange. Subscribers who pay the £25-a-month standard Virgin Mobile subscription fee will soon have access to mobile versions of BBC1, ITV1 and E4 as well as a fourth channel made up of other content from Channel 4. Pay-as-you-go Virgin Mobile users will be able to access the service for free for three months but will have to pay £5-a-month thereafter. BT said more channels will be added in short order for the exclusive deal it has with Virgin. No word on how long that exclusivity will last. NTL recently acquired Virgin Mobile U.K. and plans to bundle it as part of a quadruple play moving forward.
