Warner Bros. acquires movie discovery app Flixster

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group will acquire Flixtster, a multi-platform movie discovery application with more than 35 million downloads to date across the iOS, Android and BlackBerry operating systems. Financial terms were not disclosed. Per terms of the deal, Flixster will continue to operate independently, with plans to expand its services beyond movie discovery to enable digital content ownership and delivery across any connected digital device--in addition, Warner Bros. will acquire Flixster's Rotten Tomatoes website, which offers film reviews, information and news.

More than 25 million consumers worldwide access Flixster services each month. Flixster's communities include a database of more than 250,000 movies, 2.3 billion user reviews, 500,000 critic reviews and over 35,000 trailers and videos. Warner Bros. said it will leverage the Flixster brand and platform to launch a number of initiatives designed to foster digital content ownership, including the studio-agnostic Digital Everywhere effort, which promises consumers the tools to organize and access their entire digital library via any connected device.

Earlier this year, Warner Bros. released filmmaker Christopher Nolan's big-screen blockbusters The Dark Knight and Inception as iOS application downloads distributed in the App Store--the first time movies have been available for download on Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) devices outside of iTunes, which is still unavailable across almost two dozen international markets. Both apps are available as free downloads, and include the first five minutes of the film alongside games, trivia and related bonus features--each complete film is available as an in-app purchase, with The Dark Knight priced at $9.99 and Inception priced at $11.99, corresponding with their respective iTunes prices.
