Yahoo's DRM-free track includes ringtone

Tools

Yahoo's release of a DRM-free Jessica Simpson single is making waves in the music industry, because it's testament to the buzz a DRM-free piece of content can make at a time of restricted use. Yahoo is offering hundreds of "personalized" versions of the track that feature the artist mentioning a whole slew of common American names, which is the company's reasoning for the $1.99 price tag.

As Carlo Longino over at Mobhappy rightly points out: The DRM-free track means each personalized track also includes a ringtone since it's easy enough to convert it into one. "This illustrates not only why the ringtone market is about to implode because of phones that can play MP3s as ringers, but also illustrates why the labels are reluctant to abandon DRM: it undermines their strategy of making consumers pay multiple times for the same content," Longino said.
