Yelp teams with T-Mobile USA for customized local search app
User reviews and recommendations platform Yelp is introducing a new application customized for T-Mobile smartphones running Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android mobile operating system, promising tools to make local business searches easier and more efficient.
Preloaded on devices including the Samsung Exhibit II 4G, T-Mobile myTouch and T-Mobile myTouch Q (and also available for download across other Android phones), the Yelp app features advanced filters to simplify local search queries. The app also touts a new "saved search" functionality allowing consumers to save search filter settings (e.g. open now, free Wi-Fi and outdoor seating) and use the same criteria time and again without re-entering the information.
Yelp and T-Mobile USA will promote the app's release by launching an integrated marketing campaign across markets Austin, Denver, Detroit, Honolulu and Sacramento. The promotion will include a device giveaway at Yelp Elite parties--selected T-Mobile retail locations will also feature special Yelp check-in offers, giving an eco-friendly Yelp tote bag to the first 100 people who leverage the app to check in at the store.
As of the end of the third quarter of 2011, consumers have now written more than 22 million Yelp reviews. An average of 5 million unique users access Yelp mobile apps each month.
