Zeemote debuts handheld mobile game controller

Tools
User interface technologies developer Zeemote debuted its patented Zeemote JS1, a handheld, Bluetooth-based controller promising near-console gameplay for mobile devices. Measuring 3.7x1.4x.08 in. and weighing less than 2 oz., the ergonomically-designed Zeemote controller features a thumbstick and four assignable trigger buttons, promising real analogue control over mobile games and related applications and services. Developers and publishers including Eidos, Finblade, Fishlabs and Sega of America have already adapted mobile titles including Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Helistrike 3D and Sonic the Hedgehog for use with the Zeemote technology.

"Your fingers and the other parts of your hands designed for fast-switch action don't work on a mobile keypad in a way that's fastest and best," said Zeemote CEO Beth Marcus in an interview with FierceMobileContent. "Even in simple games, you can't go diagonally without hitting two separate buttons. [Zeemote] is a more immediate immersion in gameplay." Of course, the biggest question facing the controller is whether consumers want to carry another accessory simply to improve mobile gaming. "Focus groups are saying to us 'It's small and light, and easy to pick up and shove in your pocket--why wouldn't I carry it?'" Marcus said. "Also, it can go beyond games, and eventually do anything you want it to do. The more stuff it does that makes your life easy, the more people are willing to carry it." -Jason
