A report based on mobile data traffic from carrier networks around the world shows that, for once, Angry Birds is not necessarily the most popular app on any given day.

Verizon Wireless is entering the tastemaking business. Late last week the operator introduced The Top 20 Must-Have Apps and Android App Reviews by Verizon, a pair of online tools built to help subscribers identify Verizon-endorsed applications for devices running Google's Android and Apple's iOS. The 20 Must-Have Apps site spans games, social media, entertainment, travel, news, shopping and productivity apps, complete with download links to Apple's App Store and Google Play.

The late evening hours are peak times for mobile video demand as well as mobile social networking, according to Citrix Systems' latest ByteMobile Mobile Analytics Report, which noted average mobile video download performance drops by 30 percent during the peak hours of service.
