Top Mobile Applications 2006 - MySpace Mobile on Helio

App: MySpace Mobile on Helio
Companies: Helio/MySpace
Why it's a top app: You can't write about social networking without referencing MySpace, and commercialization concerns aside, the site is likely to continue its domination of the space for the conceivable future--which makes Helio's partnership with the online community site a savvy one. Helio's mobile interface lets MySpace users access their profiles on-the-go and offers much of the same functionality as its big brother; Web socialites can do everything from posting bulletins to adding new friends--all from the palm of their hand. Though its exclusive deal with MySpace ends in September, Helio is also well-positioned to take advantage of emerging competitors like CyWorld (especially given its background--Helio is partially owned by Korean giant SK Telecom), which is launching soon in the U.S. While MySpace owner Fox Interactive is bound to have other mobile deals in the pipeline, it will be hard to unseat the co-branding advantage that Helio's head start has granted them. This type of novel integration with a popular online service distinguishes Helio from the other flagging MVNOs. After all, what better reason is there for carrying a phone around in your pocket than keeping in touch with your friends?
